In this article, I distinguish three ethical schemes: individualism combined with selfishness, individualism combined with altruism and collectivism combined with altruism. I also distinguish three types of social morality: morality bourgeois, chivalric ethos and the scientific ethos. Then I combine these two divisions, considering the different varieties of bourgeois morality, chivalrous and scientific ethos. I argue that – in all these varieties – linking individualism and altruism appears to be the most fruitful, which should also be taken into account – broadly defined – the sphere of education.
